Clash of the (Stadium) Titans

While nothing can compare to my beloved Safeco Field a recent visit to Qwest Field (formally known as Seahawk Stadium, formally known as The Kingdom) has proved to me how beloved Safeco Field really is... below are some comparisons between the two...

Parking:

Safeco Field parking is always $20.00, parking for a PRESEASON game at Qwest Field garage was $30.00.

Security:

Safeco Field security is the normal check your bag, no liquids.... Qwest Field security was a bit different.

1. Go through the show your ticket and first check you bags to get into Touchdown City.

2. To get into the stadium you have to go through your second check which is check your ticket, check your bags, then A SECURITY GUARD GETS TO GO TO SECOND BASE. Yes, you get to go through a pat down.

3. Buying a water at Safeco Field.... no problem... I buy two so I don't have to get up later and get another. Buying a water at Qwest Field, they remove the lid of the water bottle - therefore I can't buy two at once since it's impractical to walk around with two open bottles of water.

4. Both Safeco Field and Qwest Field have a retail store that has an opening on street level. At Safeco Field you can show your ticket, go into the store to shop and if you are so inclined can continue on into the Stadium to go into the game. At Qwest Field they have the street level doors locked and actually have THREE security guards posted to the doors on the inside. To get into the store you have to first go through steps listed in item #2, THEN you have to go though another line to get your ticket stamped, once you get into the store there were at least 5 security guys wandering around- I was lucky enough to have one dogging me throughout the store. When you leave the store you again have to get in line and have another person check you and your ticket.

I was checked FIVE times by security before I got to my seat.

The party line for all of the bullshit above was all of these rules are required by the NFL.

I guarantee this: I WILL NOT RETURN TO QWEST FIELD.

I have to search you, too. Step right over here, miss!

Sadly I was forced to go to a gigantic woman for the pat down.

My goodness! That's insanity!!

It is. Like I said... I will not go back.

Well, I work for both Stadiums as a Security officer. Security is handled at both Qwest Field and Safeco by THE SAME SECURITY COMPANY (staffpro). In most cases by the very same people at both venues. Football and baseball crowds are very different therefore the security procedures for entry are also different. This is not set up by our company. This is mandated by the NFL and MLB NOT by our company. Just ask yourself one thing. Do you want to be safe or inconvenienced? I have found (and not allowed in) in many weapons. Guns knives mace you name it, usually one per game just myself. All would have made it in without a thorough security check. I agree as a sports fan its not fun...But it is better to be vigilant and inconvenienced than to be sorry.

Agreed - I would rather be safe than sorry but the whole process was a disaster.

And you're dead on about football and baseball fans being VERY different. I for sure prefer my football to be viewed on TV - at home or a bar than that nightmare of a stadium.

Me too...because I am the idiot who has to throw out all the drunks! Let me put it this way, you would be AMAZED at what goes on at the games! Both baseball and football. As far as the process being a disaster I tend to agree in some respects. The contract for qwest has just changed to the same people who do Safeco. We were kind of "thrown into it". Every week it gets better. I will say by next year it will run as smooth as safeco. But there will always be patdowns. That is done at all NFL stadiums.

Also, I will ask about the water bottle policy. I think there is some confusion on that. The reason we remove the tops off of bottles is to keep guests from using them on beer bottles. It makes it harder to conceal beer in your clothes with no tops, and harder to smuggle out and around of the stadium. Minors often will conciel beer in there coats and clothes…no tops make that more difficult. This is the 1st I have heard about water bottles. Unless the Qwest thought is water bottle tops can be used on beer bottles. I think more than anything it is vendor’s confused about removing tops. Most vendors are volunteers and more than likely the 1st time they have been there too. I can look into that.

hmm.... maybe I wouldn't mind the pat downs so much if I got to pick the person???

Just kidding.

I biggest nightmare was inside the stadium - they didn't have a restauant inside for one thing. Plus trying to shop in the store sucked. Also, you could not go inside the store from the outside - at Safeco you can. I love Safeco Field so nothing will compare to it.

god... I forgot about the water bottle lids! Ugh. Now I'm getting all pissed off again about the whole nightmare day.

Nope, I won't go back.

Well, Kelly you are pretty cute (Nice pic). Tell you what, you can come to my line and I will let you pick anyone you like to pat you down...LOL...I'm kidding. Well, I hate that you had a bad time at Qwest. Qwest had been going through some growing pains since it opened. They are learning as they go. Keeping 60K drunk rowdy fans is sometimes daunting. We try the best we can. If you are truly wanting to make a difference I would suggest instead of blogging you should write 1st and goal and tell them what you didn't care for. I know they read comments with great interest. In the short time we have been there we are tying to make it better. But in some cases it is not possible to keep it both safe and convenient. I will suggest some of your concerns to the powers that be. I hope you reconsider coming to a game in the future. One suggestion is if you don't like the rowdiness try a club level ticket. It is similar crown to the terrace club at Safeco. Thanks again for the input.

Thanks.

Actually I did write to First and Goal - I used to know a guy that worked there - he was a customer at a place I used to work (slightly preverted guy).... anyway... I did sit in the Club level - it was very nice. I didn't use the Club entry though. Since the kid did Jr. Seagals I went to Touchdown City first.

I can't imagine having to deal with 60K footballs fans. Football fans are nuts.

I'm curious... how did you find this post... it's kind of old.

I was actually was Googleling Qwest to see how much Video of the Stones concert ended up on Youtube. No cameras were allowed and I wanted to see how much showed up online. All in all not too bad. Like I said things are getting better. Staffpro does Qwest, Safeco, Marymoore, Cheatue ST. Michelle winery, Tulalip, and the Tacoma Dome. I work alot of concerts. This is just my Fun job. I also have a professional 9-5 job. Anyway, I just ran across your blog. I just felt the need to respond since we have been getting alot of "undeserved" bad press lately. Like the heart attack guy last game? They blamed security for not doing anything. Truth is there were NO security people on that scene. It was all Stadium staff (non staffpro). Also, the guy doing the "nasty in the ladies room". That happens nearly every game. Like I said there are crazy things that happen at the games. Great entertainment for us though. Really I have a blast. Maybe the guy in the women’s room was your slightly perverted friend?

Kelly said...

The preverted guy I mentioned works at First and Goal... or at least he used to.

People have sex at prac. every game??? Ugh. Gross. Does that go on at Safeco too?

I didn't hear about the guy that had the heart attack. I was in Cabo so I missed that story.

Well, we catch people in the opposite sex's bathroom many times a game. Most time is because the line is shorter but yes...we do catch people doing it there too. Actually we catch more people at safeco, because there are private Family LOCKING bathrooms there and not at Qwest. People have been filmed by security in the stands at Safeco. Apply enough alchohol and people will do anything. Anyway I could tell you stories from now until x-mas. Let's just say it keeps me employed...and very entertained. Too bad you are a republican...you are pretty cool...lol...Before you ask I am SOOO not a demo...but I am as far from a Repulican you can get without being a Demo. I have never hugged a tree.

Kelly said...

Well.... there's hope for you then...

It's tough being a single Conservative here in Seattle.

That's crazy about Safeco Field. I had no idea.

See the fact that you have no idea is proof that we sometimes do somthing right. ;)I feel your pain, it is just plain tough being single in Seattle. But you have it extra bad!! I personally cannot see how anyone in the middle class can vote republican. It is beyond me. I come from a DIE-HARD GOP family. (Its Gods cruel lil joke on me) I also work for a large Conservative Areospace company. (THE IRONY JUST WON'T STOP) So, I can get alone with neo-cons. I just don't understand them! I guess that is what makes it the whole thing work huh?

I'm a weird Consrvative too... I'm an atheist that loves going to Mass, in fact my kid goes to Catholic school and am semi-pro-choice... strange I know. But I'm highly Pro-Military, Pro-America and Anti-Crazy Ass Muslim Terrorist so the only way I could go is Conservative. I volunteer at the USO at SeaTac and love it.

We should change employers... I work at UW and everyone here is a moonbat lib!
