Patrick Michael Aranyos 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Patrick Aranyos. He was 26 years old. He was killed at the WTC on September 11th. Patrick worked as a bond broker at Euro Bond Brokers. Born in The Hague, the Netherlands, Patrick grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He lived all over from Amersham, England to Jupiter, Florida and ended up in Boston, Massachusetts for college. After graduating in 1997 from Boston College with a degree in finance and marketing, Pat found his way to the isle of Manhattan. His parents were Alexander and Winifred, he had a brother Alexander and sister Stephanie.

In his memory:
March 11, 2002
I knew Pat at Boston College. He was truly a great guy. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

Throughout a person's life, it's rare to meet a close, unconditional, and enduring friend that will perservere with you, laugh with you, and be there for you whenever you need him. I was lucky enough to have Patrick be that friend to me, and he was so much more. On so many levels, I could relate to him and saw many of my own personality traits reflected in him - only he carried them off much better. So when he passed on, so did a part of me. My heart aches for him and my deepest sympathy goes out to the many that share in my grief. Sometimes I have dreams of Patrick. They are so vivid and he is so real that when I awake, I am severely effected and I know it's going to be a rough day. Patrick was my best friend and I know that there will never be another like him in my lifetime.

Dear Sandy & Winnie,
Today it's Sunday 13 Jan, and a brilliantly sunny day here in LA. I was phoned this morning by my father who was in tears, having read about Patrick in the NY times. I cannot tell you how sad I feel for you and the family. I was one of the lucky ones on that terrible day, watching as the events unfolded infront of my eyes at ground zero. I remember Patrick as warmly as all the others who have signed his book. He was one of the good guys, always smiling and happy. I hope to race this Feb in the Olympics with the Hungarian team. I'd like to dedicate our efforts to his memory.
Peace be with you

Every time we come together-your absence is overpowering. I find myself looking around the corner for you--to ask me how I am doing, how I am really doing, and to share a laugh, or two...but you never turn that corner, so now I must talk to you in my prayers.
We all miss you terribly and we will never, ever forget you.
May God bless your soul and your family...

Dear Elizabeth,
Well, another year as passed. Last week was a busy week for you again. First, Esti, Sarah and I went to Washington, DC for the day ending at the Capitol for the unveiling of the plaque to honor you and the other 39 passengers and crew aboard Flight93. It is amazing to think that your name will be forever in that building of so much history for our country. Then on Thursday, we joined your friends at the Ropewalk for the annual fundraiser for your scholarship fund at Towson University. It was held on a weekday instead of the weekend this year and to be honest turned out to be for me personally, a gift. For the first time in years, I was not sitting around on the 10th of September dreading the next day. On Friday morning, Esti, Sarah and I left at 6AM to drive to Shanksville for the memorial service for you and the other 39 passengers and crew. We had not been to the last two years events because as you know, we spent it in New York visiting Sarah and eating at Ruby Foos, your favorite. We drove up and back the same day. As always, it is an emotional day and draining. I miss you as much today as I did 8 years ago. It is hard to believe that it has been eight years. Before, I forget, while we were in Washington, we visited the Smithsonian and saw the display they had to 9/11. They had for Flight 93 a picture of the crash site and also a damaged air phone. I immediately thought that this could have been the same phone that you used to call Esti that day. I am so glad that you called her because I know that if anyone could have helped you get through that day, it was going to be Esti. It gives me great comfort to know that in your last minutes of life, that you could share them with her. I love you so very much and miss you beyond words. Love, Daddy

John Talignani 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to John Talignani. John was killed on Flight 93 on September 11th, he was 74 years old. He was a cook, a pizzeria owner, and later a bartender at Manhattan's Palm Too Restaurant, where he worked for 20 years. John had three stepsons, and was preceded in death by his wife Selma. A retired bartender who schmoozed with the likes of Donald Trump and Dick Clark during his 20 years at a tony Manhattan steakhouse, Talignani just couldn't resist the pitches on QVC.
Some of the messages left for John and his family:

February 12, 2003
I never met Mr. Talignani but I did work with his wife Selma years ago. She was a wonderful woman. I know he must have been wonderful too. Its 2-14-03 and to this day, you and your family are on my mind. I'm so sad, there was so much loss in the family, in such tragic ways.
This family will forever be in my prayers. I think of Glen often and pray that God bless him with strength and love. Carmen Lorenzo

Dear John,
You are in my daily prayers, as is my son, Stephen, your stepson, who was lost in Tower 1 of the WTC on Sept. 11th. It was a double tragedy that day for me, as we were still friends up until the end. I pray that God keeps you in his care.I know that you are in a better place, with your wife, parents and brother - and Steve.

God Bless you and your family and may the memories you have help you through this most tragic time.
God Bless you

Donald A. Peterson 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Donald Peterson. He was killed on Flight 93 along with his wife Jean on September 11th. Don was 66 years old, Jean was 55. Donald and Jean Peterson were flying to San Francisco for an annual family trip to Yosemite National Park. Donald Peterson, 66, former head of Continental Electric in New Jersey and a former member of the New Jersey Board of Education, had started working as a Christian missionary about 10 years ago with his wife. Jean had just held her first grandchild, one of her three daughters said. Donald and Jean lived a life of quiet service to alcoholics and addicts, women with crisis pregnancies and residents of impoverished nations. Both had loving families and I know they will be very missed.

Some memories and thanks from loved ones and strangers:
March 13, 2002
Grace and Catherine and all of your family~ We don't get to see each other very often but I just wanted you to know that all of your friends at home think about you constantly. We love you and we loved your mom and Don. You are always in our prayers.
Hillary Zavalas, Spring Lake, New Jersey March 11, 2002
I first met Don at America's Keswick, "where God speaks to hearts", where he was counselling some of the men I also was working with. His warm understanding compassion won my immediate admiration and respect. My wife and I were at their memorial service at the Lincroft Bible Church and it was wonderful to hear the many tributes given at that time.

to Mr. and Mrs Petersens family and friends, I am truly sorry for the death of your parents and friends, they died heroes on that flight, and just remember, they wont be forgotten, A cousin of mine was on that same plane, they fought to save themselves and saved many on the ground with their efforts, we must all remember this, and not let others forget. Having lost both of my parents, I know that pain you must be feeling, talk to each other, stay in close contact, support each other, you will all need each other. I will be thinking of you each and every day.. Sincerely, Debbie

Lauren Grandcolas 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Lauren Grandcolas. She was married and lived in California. At the time of her death at 38, she was three months pregnant with her and her husbands first child. From what I have read of her she had a loving family and she was quite an accomplished person. Lauren was a marketing expert for Good Housekeeping and was also writing a book on self-help for women, covering finance and other topics. Three weeks prior to September 11, she left her job at Good Housekeeping in order to dedicate herself to the book. Her sisters have since worked together with the publisher, Chronicle Books, to get the book published entitled You Can Do It!: The Merit Badge Handbook for Grown-Up Girls, was published on April 10, 2005.The book provides a guide, modeled on the Girl Scouts' merit badge system. The proceeds from the sale of the book go to the Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas Foundation, which contributes funds to a college scholarship program, and charitable organizations across the United States.

8/17/11: Updated info: To honor her spirit, Jack and Lauren's family started the Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas Foundation, a philanthropic organization that helps people attain their life goals. One of the foundation's key acts is financially supporting a state-of-the-art birthing room at Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, Calif.

Our second born child was conceived on 9/11. When we found out she was a girl we looked up the list of victims from 9/11 and chose Lauren. I was also 38 years old, the same age as Ms. Grandcolas. Just our own small personal tribute.

Jack,
It took me a long time to respond to this. I didn't want to bother you with everything that was going on at the time for you. I still don't know what to say other than I was lucky enough to be around Lauren a lot in college, since she was Carol's best bud. Nothing but good memories. I have thought of you MANY times since 9/11 ole' pal. I know you have gotten better, because you are a winner in life. I know because we went through some trials together, both with our endeavours and friendships. I am proud to say I know someone who has been as humble and respectful as you have been through your ordeal. I send many positive vibes your way, as I have since I found out. I would love to hear from you someday Jack, if you have moved on enough to say hi without any pain involved. Things have REALLY changed here. You wouldn't believe some of it. Anyways, many positive thoughts sent your way, and I miss ya man!
Your bro',

I had the pleasure of living across the hall from Lauren our freshman year at UT and even have a couple of pictures of her from those days. She was such a cutie and fun to have around. It's strange and sad to think that she is gone, but the strength and bravery she exhibited that day will always stay with me.

Andrew Garcia 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Andrew Garcia. He was killed on Flight 93 on September 11th. He was 62, but most people wouldn't have believed it if they met him. Andrew Garcia kept active, both physically and mentally, and loved to play tricks on people. The President and founder of Cinco Group, Inc. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Kelly Garcia and Audrey Olive; and son, Andrew. Three months after the crash his widow Dorothy received a gift from the FBI wrapped in velvet; her husbands wedding ring. What a gift that must have been and she is quoted as saying, "God has answered my prayers." I am so sorry you lost your husband. I found a picture from their wedding, I hope that is okay. I used it because it's such a glorious picture. Andrew Garcia was obviously well loved.

September 11, 2009
Andy was a customer in a small packaging store that I worked in while living in California. I was "stunned" when I heard the news. My birthday is September 11th, and every year, I think of the wonderful guy that came in and bought a bag of packing peanuts or a few boxes, that always had a kind gentle smile on his face. He was a blessing to know...

Dorothy,
It has been many months since I learned of Andy's death and with the recent special on Discovery, I am again reminded of the man that he was and will always remain to be in my memory, a brave courageous man that thought of others first and foremost.
The many business trips that we took together while I was with Englehard will always be full of more than memories of customer visits and sales, it will full of the fatherly advice that he gave me about life that I still use to this day.
I miss him dearly, and hope that you and your family are well.

To the Garcia Family,
My name is Susan Hiscock and I am the mother of three boys ages 12, 16 and 18. I was washing my son's school uniform and pulled a sticker off the front of his sweater. On the sticker was written, Andrew Garcia 62. I asked him what it meant. He said that was who he prayed for during the memorial service at his school, St. Bonaventure's College, on Sept. 11, 2002. I thought your family would like to know that a 12 year old boy in Newfoundland, Canada, prayed for your husband, father and grandfather. We seached the internet and can now put a face to Andrew Garcia. I will keep the sticker and we will keep him in our prayers and our hearts. Although we're at the opposite end of the continent we feel a connection to you. Also, many thousands of stranded U.S. passengers landed in Nfld. on Sept.11, 2001. We had two ladies from Kentucky stay at our home during the time that flights were grounded. May God give you strength. We'll keep you in our hearts. Love from the Hiscock family.
Susan Hiscock, St. John's, Newfoundland

Jane Folger 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying triute to Jane Folger. She was killed on Flight 93 on September 11th. She was 73 years old, from Bayonne, N.J., was a retired bank employee. She was heading to San Francisco. Her sister in-law Pat was also on Flight 93.

Messages from friends and loved ones:

Our deepest sympathies go out to you and the Folger family on this day of remembrance. How saddened we were when we heard the news about your mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with you today.

The saddest day was hearing of us loosing you. May you be in heaven with Jack your son and my friend. My heart goes out to all of Jane's children.

February 03, 2002
As I watched the events of September 11th unfold from my Manhattan apartment, little did I know that Jane and her sister-in-law Pat were on Flight 93. I had already received word of the loss of my best friend's brother at 1WTC earlier that day, when the call came in from my aunt telling me that Jane and Pat had perished in the crash. I was so deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news.
I knew Jane from the time I was a young girl growing up in Bayonne. She was a dear friend of my Aunt Grace and I would often see her at family functions. I will never forget her inner strength and tremendous faith and courage, and most importantly the support she gave my family in our time of sorrow. But what I will remember most is her shining smile and sincere warmth. I know she is still smiling down on all of us. She was truly an inspiration in life and we will remember her always with fondness and love.
God bless Jane and give her beloved family strength and courage during these difficult days.
Karen Longa Dobies, New York, New York

Jane has two wonderful grandchildren here in our town - her son and daughter-in-law have a wonderful family and this must be a result of an upbringing of love and respect - may God be with the entire Folger family.

I did not know Jane personally, but only knew her through her son, Neil, who was one of my dearest friends in college. Neil spoke often and highly of his mother. I can only say that, if our children are a reflection of the work we put into their upbringing, then Neil was Jane's most magnificent reflection. He was my hero when my mom died. He was always there for me, a shoulder to cry on, a friend to laugh with. When he died, at such a young age, I felt that a ray of sunshine had been taken away from my life. Maybe God meant for Jane to be together again with her beloved son. I hope they found each other in heaven. May they both rest in peace.

Joseph Deluca 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Joseph Deluca. He was killed on Flight 93 on September 11th. His girlfriend Linda Gronlund was also onboard Flight 93. Joseph was a Computer program designer, Pfizer Consumer Healthcare. For Joseph Deluca cars were a preoccupation. He raced them, ran clubs for them, drew them, wrote about them and talked about them. A board member of the northern New Jersey chapter of the Sports Car Club of America, he wrote and edited the group's newsletter. For years, that newsletter and other publications included his creation "The Adventures of Raymond the Cat," a single-panel cartoon about the travails of a road-rallying, windbreaker-wearing cat.

Some messages I found to Joseph from friends and loved ones:

Chris Wenzel. P&R NER SCCA. We'll miss Linda Gronlund & Joe DeLuca at LRP. Thanks to everyone else onboard!

Marvin R. Woods 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Marvin Woods. He was killed in the Pentagon on September 11th. Marvin Roger Woods, the son of a sailor, enlisted in the Navy when he was in high school and went on to serve for 23 years. When he retired from the Navy in 1984, he took a six-week vacation, then reported back to his office at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and continued in his job as director of communications, but as a civilian. He liked to hunt and fish and work in his woodshop behind the couple's southern Maryland home. Left behind was his wife and three kids. He was 58 years old. According to his wife, Betty, he loved his country and would want Americans to stand together against terrorism.

Ernest M. Willcher 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Ernest Willcher. He was killed at the Pentagon on September 11th. Left behond are his wife Shirley and two sons, Ben and Joel. I'm so sorry that you lost him. Some messages about him that I found:

Ernie worked for me in the Office of the Army General Counsel for about 15 years. He was a recognized expert in the field of civilian personnel law, and I, as well as the entire Office of the Secretary of the Army, relied upon him heavily. He was remarkably skilled, thorough, reliable, and unflappable no matter what the situation.

Even more noteworthy than his outstanding dedication and professional skills, however, were his qualities as a human being. He was a man of the highest personal integrity, thoroughly dedicated to his family, and warm and caring toward all. We miss him greatly. Posted by Darrell Peck on 2008-09-11

A special and caring person. Ernie made a solid and wonderful impression on me as I only met him for a class the first month we both joined Booz Allen in 2001. Ernie always smiled, was proud to have faithfully served his country for so long, and excited about a new career in Booz Allen. He always smiled. Only a few people will ever make an impression on others that endures after only a few days together. Ernie was one of them.
"Ernie represented the best of human nature," said Lloyd Howell, a Booz Allen vice president. "Ernie's intellect and his inquisitive mind were impressive. His ready smile drew us in."

At the time of their deaths Ernie was meeting with Army Lt. Gen. Timothy J. Maude to discuss a Web-based survivors benefits tool they were working on. At Thursday's service, Reginald Brown, Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, said the Army just decided to implement the project. "This is eloquent testimony to the contributions these men have made," Brown said. "The work these men have done is visible across the Army.... They leave behind significant accomplishments."

Sandra White 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Sandra White. She was killed in the Pentagon on September 11th. She was a Civilian employee in the U.S. Army. Left behind are her husband Oscar and two sons, Oscar III and Jonathan. Her husband said he was drawn to "her sincerity, kindness, honesty. I had the feeling that I met someone as committed to family and values as I was, and I made up my mind that night I was going to marry her."
Sandra White, 44, was a civilian in the Army budget office, but her husband, a retired Army colonel, said she displayed the fortitude of a soldier. She supported him not only in his daily deeds, he said, but also in much larger ways, such as when she stayed home with their young sons in Virginia while he trained at Fort Hood, Tex., for two years. "I could not have had a better partner in my wife," he said. "God truly blessed us with 18 years."

September 07, 2004
Sandra was a beautiful person. She was a childhood friend who I had lost contact with for over 25 years, until running into her in the hallway of the Pentagon about a year before 9/11. As a child growing up in Hampton, VA, she was the type of person you would want your daughter to be; always the picture of grace and class. During our brief encounter at the Pentagon, we played catch up. I found myself amazed at how this little girl had matured into a beautiful woman, wife and mother. As we near the 3rd anniversary of this tragedy, I pray that God will continue to bless her family and her soul.
November 12, 2004
Sandra - I think about you often and recall our pleasant association in the days when we worked together at HECSA - Military Accounting in Alexandria. May God Bless you and keep you always - I will always consider myself very fortunate to have known you.

Another 9-11 has gone by, and I continue to miss you. You were beautiful, both inside and outside. I will always remember that before my surgeries (all the years we knew each other), I had difficulty walking to the front office. Being me, I would never ask for help. You would quietly pick up paperwork and bring it to me and have a little visit like it was a social call. Yet, I knew you had gone out of your way to do it and do it tactfully. I will never forget the smile on your face when you showed me the picture of your sun conure kissing Sam. Your love for your daughter and your conure were always something you shared with me when you visited. The years continue to pass but I will never forget you.

Gregg Harold Smallwood 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Gregg Smallwood. I am sorry, I could not find a picture online of him. He was killed in the Pentagon at age 44. Left behind was his wife Lisa and his three daughters; Wendy, Lynn and Valerie. Mr. Smallwood was a Chief Information Systems Technician in the Navy. http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/ghsmallwood.htm

Some tributes that I found:
August 05, 2010
I was listening to a song on the way to work this morning, God Bless the USA and it made me think of Gregg and all the other service members as well as civilians that lost their lives that terrible day. I'm so proud to serve where so many brave men and women just like Gregg served before. I hope that if Gregg has found any time to watch me that he is proud of me in some capacity and I will always try to remember Gregg and work harder because of him. Hooyah Chief!

Gerard (Jerry) P. Moran Jr. 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Jerry Moran. He was killed in the Penagon on September 11th, he was working there as an engineering contractor for the Navy, doing video teleconferencing, as he has for the last three years. He was 39 years old. Left behind was his wife of 18 years, Joyce A. Moran and two children, Shannon, 16, and Dane, 14. I read that both of his children were accomplished athletes whose teams their father has coached.
Family and friends describe Moran as a humorist and a humanitarian. When he was not coaching fast-pitch softball, baseball or power lifting, Moran's wife said, he could be found in the kitchen whipping up gourmet meals and experimenting with recipes from his many cookbooks. Some of his favorite ones are for coconut pork, chicken cordon bleu and prime rib. He also enjoys relaxing at home with his family and trout fishing with brother Kevin. Kevin Moran's daughter was in one of the World Trade Center towers when it was hit on Tuesday. She escaped before it collapsed.

Major Ronald D. Milam 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Major Ronald Milam. Major Milam was married with one child and had another baby on the way. He was married to Captain Jacqueline Milam and was 33 years old.
There is a very touching memorial to Major Milam on http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/rdmilam.htm.

Here are some other memories left for Major Milam, left by those who knew and loved him. Bless you Major Milam, you sound like the best of Americans.

I was stationed with Ronald in Germany. He was a lieutenant then, and I had a great time schooling him on the basketball court. This brother is truly missed, and we will never be the same. Brother, I know that you are doing well in God's arms. To the family, please accept my condolences and prayers. Take care, Brother. Posted by Mark Lovelace on 2008-04-09

On behalf of our Family, "The Nunleys". I would just like express our love for Ron. He was a nephew and cousin to all of us. We will always miss him. We all grew up as a very close and happy family. He always brought joy to each of us. This day 9/11 will always mark a sad day in our lives... but he will always be a joy in our hearts. I can truly say that on behalf our family we will always miss him.

Sharon Carver 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Sharon Carver. Sharon Carver, 38, had worked for several years as an Army civilian and was working toward a master's degree in accounting from Strayer University. Sharon S. Carver was only days back from an annual family vacation at Disney World and settling into her routine as an accountant for the Army when a hijacked plane crashed into her Pentagon office Tuesday morning."She went to Florida and had fun with the whole family," her nephew, Sean Carver said.
Carver cherished her family, her nephew said. She spent her final vacation with five of her siblings. She lived with a brother and a sister in her Waldorf home. And though she wasn't married and had no children, she treated her nieces and nephews as if they were her own."She was a good person who took care of her family and her nieces and nephews," Sean Carver said.

Its another year. I really miss my aunt Sharon. I will not never be the same person I was before she passed. My mind do not function and think the same about life no more.

Bernard Brown 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Bernard Brown. Bernard was only 11 years old and was on flight 77. I'm sorry to say that I had forgotten that there were kids on the planes. I cannot imagine the grief his family must feel every day - I am so sorry for the loss of your son. He did not deserve this. Here are some quotes from legacy.com.
I saw your Daddy on TV a few days ago and could see how much he misses you. What a good boy you are. I don't know you, but I feel the void you have left on this earth. God Bless You sweetheart.

Jeffrey A. Hersch 9/11/01

I have the honor of giving tribute to Jeffrey A. Hersch. Jeffrey Hersch worked as an accountant at Cantor Fitzgerald, on the 101st floor of 1 World Trade Center. Jeffrey was a father and a husband. Below are some quotes that I was able to find about this fellow American:

Jeff was a gentleman among gentlemen and a mensch. He had a wonderful sense of humor that we loved.

In a few weeks your grandson will be born and will be named after you,Terrorists’ attacks can’t erase the tradition of Jews.We have no grave or marker for your resting place,And what we have left is remembering your smiling face.Rest in peace, dear Jeffrey, and know that an entire nation mourns you, And in tribute we continue to honor the red, white, and blue.

I worked with Jeff circa somewhere in the 1980's at JP Morgan when he was responsible for the Fixed Asset Accounting systems. He was always one of the easiest people to get along with. We had many laughs together.

In 2006 I paid tribute to Matt Grzymalski. You can find that tribute here:

Tara Creamer 9/11/01

I have the the honor of giving tribute to Tara Creamer. Tara was on flight 11. A quote by her husband explained what type of person she was: "She was just a kind and loving wife and mother. And she was everything to me and my children," John Creamer. Tara lived with her husband and their two young children in Boston. Tara was a planning manager for TJX Cos. Before leaving for a business trip she left this note for her still sleeping family early on September 11th, ''Goodbye Everyone, I love you and will miss you all very much! Love, Mommy. XOXO Kisses and Hugs.''
I have no doubt that Tara was much loved and is very missed.
Here are some quotes that I found from people that knew Tara:

John D. Yamnicky Sr. 9/11/01

I have the honor of giving tribute to John D. Yamnicky Sr. John was on flight 77. What a tremendous American he was. Here is some information that I found out about him, along with some quotes from people that knew and loved him. John D. Yamnicky Sr., 71, a decorated Navy test pilot who survived combat missions in Korea and Vietnam. His wife, Janet, was working as a nurse at Jacksonville Naval Hospital when they met. They married in 1959 and had four children, three of whom still live in Southern Maryland.
"John spent most weekends on the tractor, mowing, dragging the fields, checking the fence lines. He loved his tractors--he had two--and really enjoyed taking care of the farm on weekends or evenings. He loved seeing the improvement and changes, something not always obvious in his work with the Navy and government. We have lived on, and improved, a 10-acre horse farm in Waldorf, Maryland, for 30 years. The picture, with him holding our first grandson on the tractor, includes what was important in his life: home and family and teaching the grandchildren." -- Jann Yamnicky, wife.
John was a Naval Aviator, a true professional. I met him in the fall of 1960 at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River, MD. John was in our U.S. Navy Test Pilot School class. It was Class 28. After working, studying and flying with John, I rated him as number one in all aspects of the job and from our first meeting I was impressed with him as a knowing, caring and considerate person... always with a smile and a bountiful sense of humor, the kind of gentleman you enjoy being with and having on your team. It was with particular enthusiasm that I joined up with him for our annual Tailhook Reunion and Symposiums and TPS class reunions in such places as Lexington Park, Maryland and San Diego. In fact, the last time I saw John was at Tailhook '01 in Sparks, Nevada. It was immediately before the infamous date now referred to as ... 9/11. John is aboard that great aircraft carrier in the heavens and waiting for us to come aboard.

John was a great man, a great father, grandfather, and friend. He was a pleasure to be around.

John was buried as a hero in Arlington cemetery. Please visit this link to view some pictures of John and to read a very touching tribute that was written by his daughter.

I remember Captain Yamnicky well. I was a member of VA-172 from June 1966 – Oct 1969. He was XO and later became CO of the squadron during that time. He was a great skipper and respected his men regardless of their rank. He was also well liked and respected by his men. My sincere thoughts and prayers go out to his family for their great loss. I have attached a picture of the CO taken at Ramstein AFB in 1969 when we were on detachment there for a base COC ceremony.

While serving with VA-172 Bluebolts I got to know Captain Yamnicky when he was the XO. I remember him as a very kind officer and gentleman. I learned alot from him and the Navy. He was a very respected Skipper and well liked by his men, officers and enlisted. Skipper and the men serving with him became one of the best A4 Squardron during that time. Mt thoughts are with him and all. I frequently look through my cruise books which gives me great memories. I send my condolences out to the Skipper's family.

I stumbled upon this nice site by accident. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Captain Yamnicky personally, I did have the pleasure of working with his wonderful daughter, Jennifer. Now I realize that we have more in common. John served on the USS Ranger in the 60's - I served on the Ranger in the 80's. John served with VA-172, the Bluebolts, I served with VA-176, the Thunderbolts. After 9/11, I always knew that there was someone I had contact with who either died on that horrible day, or whose immediate family was affected by it. I spent many years at Andrews AFB and shared beers with people who worked daily in the Pentagon, but lived on base. I always worried that one of them died at the Pentagon that morning. Until today- I never knew Jennifer's Dad was taken. Now I know where she got the good qualities that make her a great person. My heartfelt condolences go out to Jennifer and her family! God Bless!!

I had the unique honor to serve as John's Assistant Operations Officer in VA-146. We made a combat deployment together on USS RANGER in 1966. John was a great leader, a true warrior, and an American patriot. I was fortunate to spend a weekend with him at a Tailhook reunion some 10 years ago. I was devastated to hear of his loss. My heart goes out to the Yamnicky family. I will never forget John with his ready smile and friendly manner, rest in peace my Shipmate.

Alan Beaven 9/11/01

I have the honor of giving tribute to Alan Beaven. Alan was a passenger on flight 93. Alan enjoyed protecting the environment and considered suing polluters both a moral duty and an intellectual challenge. Alan died the day after his eighth wedding anniversary. Alan leaves behind a large and loving extended family, including John and Chris, his two sons by his first wife Liz, and the exquisite Dahlia Sonali, his 5-year old daughter by his second wife, Kimi Kaipaka.

Some quotes I found about Alan:

Dear Alan,I want to thank you for our conversation. You`re just as wonderful as everybody told me. I`m so glad you`re Sara`s guardian angel and I`ll promise you to always take good care of our little princess.

Alan interviewed me for King's College, London in 1979 with (Dame) Judith Mayhew. Thanks to his healthy interest in Rugby (he was a Kiwi after all) I had surprisingly little difficulty in getting in! He was a lovely man and we all miss him.

It was a big gift to spend a week next to you, in spiritual discovery and discussion, before you moved on. It was a great pleasure to know you. You are a dedicated yogi. Thanks, John M.

I met Alan while conducting an investigation into the Yosemite National Park Merced River Spill. I was a State Engineer, but Alan made me want to go into water law. I will always remember him.
Jon Risinger,
Fresno, California

I was an attorney representing a defendant in one of Alan's environmental cases. When presented with the facts showing there was no basis for recovery, he dismissed the case instead of doing the usual shakedown for the costs of defending oneself. I remember him for his integrity. I admire him. We talked about sailing and I kidded him about being a kiwi and that NZ was sailing against Prada (Italy) in the Americas Cup. I often wonder if his gentle, peaceful disposition would have permitted him to charge the cockpit. No matter, he left a legacy of positively impacting people while he was alive, such as me. The rest would be frosting. I feel for his family.

I will always remember Alan as he was a good friend, a fellow meditator and devoted to God and his family. I know, without a doubt, that he was truly a hero in thwarting a worse disaster by helping his fellow passengers to overcome the hijackers. I've known Alan and Kim for several years in Oakland, CA, when I lived in the Ashram there. My thoughts and prayers to Alan's family on this day of remembering our heroes. Blessings.

Kris Romeo Bishundat 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Kris Romeo Bishundat. Kris who would have turned 24 on September 14, was assigned in May to the communications division of the Chief of Naval Operations Center at the Pentagon. An information systems technician there, Bishundat had moved to newly renovated offices three weeks before the attacks. He had enlisted in the Navy six years to the day the terrorists struck. Reading about this great American and great human being it really makes me proud and sad. He had many friends - from what I could find online and he is greatly missed. I'm so sorry you lost your son, your brother, your boyfriend and your friend.
A message from his sister:
"Ever since I can remember, my brother always wanted a jeep. He found a picture of himself on his second birthday, posing with a jeep that had belonged to our great-grandfather in Guyana. I remember him showing it to my mom and dad and saying, 'See, I was destined to have a jeep.'
He got this jeep not long before September 11. It was the 60th anniversary edition of a Jeep Wrangler. He was just beaming. The jeep was his way of saying that you only live once.
After September 11, I got a phone call from an older lady who wanted to express her condolences to our family. She said she had met Romeo at a restaurant while they were both waiting for a table and he offered to take her for a ride in his jeep. Although they did not go for the ride, they sat at the bar, he bought them drinks and they spoke for hours. She thought it was the sweetest thing because they had never met before and she had thought that younger people did not want to talk to the elderly.
This story is indicative of Romeo's character and philosophy on life. Romeo loved the movie "Pay it Forward" -- the story of a young man who performs random acts of kindness for strangers. When Romeo drove through a toll both, he would pay the next person's toll. If he saw someone who looked lonely, he would talk to them."
-- Devita Bishundat, sister
He was an adventurous, fun-loving soul who was into surfing, golf and tennis, his mother said. "He loved life and lived every day to its fullest." Her son had a real sensitive side also, she said. His mother recalled how, in a conversation with him about an hour before the attack, he expressed how he was so touched that his sister, Danita, not only took the time to pack his lunch but also wrote a note telling him to enjoy it. He was so touched by it, he also told his girlfriend, Lisa Kenney, about the note in a phone call to her before the attack. "He was very sensitive," his mother said. "I couldn't have asked for a better son."

Cmdr. Robert Allan Schlegel 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Cmdr. Robert Allan Schlegel. Commander Schlegel was in the Pentagon on 9/11/01. "He comes from a military family," said Schlegel, adding that she is proud of his accomplishments, including a recent promotion. "It was a big deal that he was selected for command."
Schlegel, who was born in Gray, Maine, graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va., where he was a French and journalism major. He also received a master's degree in international affairs. Before being posted to the Pentagon last September, Schlegel was executive officer of the USS Arthur W. Radford, a 9,000-ton destroyer. That assignment followed tours aboard the USS Scott and the USS Yarnell.
"He saved his boutonniere from our wedding day 14 years ago. My husband distinguished himself academically and professionally, but I feel his legacy is the way that he touched people and his relationships. The boutonniere is symbolic of not just our relationship, but the depth of his caring. He was a man of many dimensions, and this captures what he held closest to his heart." --Dr. Dawn Schlegel, wife

Rob, There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about you - and your family's sacrifice. I hope your mom and Dawn got to attend the dedication of the memorial at the Pentagon. Certainly a fitting tribute... hope to visit it next time I get down to D.C. God bless you shipmate - and your family - you are sorely missed!
(former LCDR Gair) MacKenzie, Commander Schlegal reported to the USS Spartanburg County LST-1192 around the same time that I did. He was an Ensign then. I was enlisted. Most officers are business only with the enlisted but Mr. Schlegal was down to earth. I stood many watches with him in the pilot house. He was the best and most memorable officer that I served with. Just a really decent guy.

I went to college with Rob in VA. He had a dynamic spirit and presence. If he was in the room, you noticed him. Rob was wicked smart, wicked funny, and was wild about Ozzy Osbourne….young Ozzy; not the sad reality show character. He also LOVED his future wife Dawn; she was his high school sweetheart and girlfriend throughout Rob’s college experience. I remember one late-night bull session in the dorm when Rob told me the story of how they met. Dawn had moved to Gray Maine as a high school student. She and Rob became acquainted as both were in the band. She was beautiful and sent shockwaves through the halls of the school - every guy wanted to date her. I remember as if it were yesterday, Rob shaking his head as he related the story, looking me in the eye and saying, “she picked me….I still can’t believe it but she picked me.”

Lt. Cmdr. Ronald James Vauk 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Lt. Cmdr. Ronald James Vauk. Lt. Cmdr. Vauk worked in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001 as a Watch commander for the U.S. Navy.

Born in Nampa, Idaho, Vauk was a 1987 graduate of the Naval Academy, where he earned a degree in political science. He served on the submarines USS Glenard P. Lipscomb and the USS Oklahoma City, attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander and receiving several medals and commendations. After about seven years of active duty, he entered the reserves and began working for Delex Corp. in Tyson's Corner, Virginia, where he was project manager for naval contracts.
A devoted family man, Commander Vauk also enjoyed woodworking and golf.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, the former Jennifer Mooney, who is expecting a child in November, and their 3-year-old son, Liam; four brothers, Charles Vauk of Boise, Idaho, David Vauk of Nampa, Gary Vauk of Grapevine, Texas, and Dennis Vauk of Houston; and four sisters, Teri Masterson of Carson City, Nev., Celia Shikuma of Huntington Beach, Calif., Lynne Caba of Nampa and Patricia Vauk of Minneapolis.

"He listed his first goal to be the best father and husband he could be," DeBoy said. "Ron stood watch for the nation on September 11. Now he stands watch for all of us."
DeBoy said Vauk was a dedicated son. Every year he returned to Nampa to visit his parents, Hubert and Dorothy Vauk. He was talented, funny and a playful teaser.
A 1982 Nampa High School graduate, Vauk was the baby of the family who always won at Scrabble, DeBoy said.

Some quotes that I found:

Jennifer, Ed and I said a prayer together for you, Ron, and your lovely family. We still look at photo's from past Wardroom gatherings and smile at the wonderful times we had and to this day relive with big smiles and laughter. May God keep you safe and know your are in our thoughts. Love and hugs, Ed and Kathy Dempsey

Dear Jennifer,I'm one of the crazy crowd from St. Paul's in Nampa that grew up with Ron. We had a big group of friends in our high school years that really got us all through those times, group "dates" to dances, etc. In senior year, Ron and I were voted "most intelligent" together - though I personally think he should have also gotten a special award - "most mischievous!" I cherish his memory and smile every time I think of him - except knowing that he is gone. I hope that this anniversary of his death finds you strong and in the loving arms of your children. Bless you.

To the Vauk family:I went to school with Ronnie clear back at St. Pauls Elementary. Yes, he is still Ronnie to me. He was certainly a special person who was very smart and had a wonderful sense of humor. I find myself going by St. Pauls and thinking of the days when we were kids and all the fun and tears we had together making it clear to the sixth grade.he was.
Patty Neavill, Ronnie was dearly loved by many who considered him a friend and it is very hard to forget how special he was.

Patricia J. Statz 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Patricia J. Statz. Patricia worked in the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. After living in Germany for the past 17 years, Patricia Statz was thrilled to return to the U.S. and buy a house in Washington, D.C.A student of theater and music who sang at many weddings, the married mother of two worked at the Pentagon for the past 18 months."One time we were traveling in Europe, and we were standing outside an old Gothic church," said her mother, JoAnn Statz of Chippewa Falls, Wis. "She said, `I always wanted to sing in one of these Gothic churches.' So she wandered into the balcony and she sang `Ave Maria.' It was beautiful."
Pat and I became friends during our 18-month Master program in Bamberg Germany. We often carpooled to our night and weekend classes. She was always a bright shinny star to those around her. Our ideas and views often differed but I can't remember her ever saying a single negative thing about anyone. During one of our weekend class she thoughtfully threw a baby shower for my newborn son(he still has the beautiful blanket) This was typical of her. It was the many little things that she did with her time and talents that has enriched lives of people lucky enough to have known her.To Dave and the boys I grieve with you at the loss.

Joseph John Pycior 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Joseph John Pycior. Joseph worked in the Petagon on September 11, 2001. The aviation warfare systems operator first class, just months away from his Navy retirement.

Mr. Pycior, 39, was looking forward to starting a new career as a middle school teacher, focusing on his favorite subject, history. The Civil War buff had completed correspondence courses at Thomas Edison State College in May and was supposed to collect his bachelor of arts degree in history during a ceremony in Trenton on Oct. 13.Instead, his wife and two sons, Joey III, 10, and Robbie, 8, came from their home in Landover, Md., and accepted the degree for him. From his youngest days, Mr. Pycior wanted to join the Navy, said his mother, Arlene Pycior.

He was in the Navy Brigade as a boy and entered the Navy Junior ROTC at East Rutherford's Becton Regional High School, where he met Terri.A week after graduating from high school, Mr. Pycior enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Persian Gulf twice, on P-3 airplanes and in the recruiting field in Philadelphia. He began working at the Pentagon in 1999."With any job he was given, he was very conscientious with his job," his mother said. "He was a good father, a good husband and a good son."Mr. Pycior also loved being Webelos den leader of his older son's Cub Scout pack and motivating the young boys, Terri Pycior said. "He was like the life of the party," she said.

During Labor Day weekend, the couple went to the Cherry Hill area and talked with real estate agents about houses. They wanted to settle down, get a dog. They promised the boys it would be their last move.Mr. Pycior was looking for a house with a basement. He was going to make a special room with no carpeting, where he and sons could build huge models, made of Legos.Along with his mother, his wife and his two sons, Mr. Pycior is survived by his father, Joseph J. Pycior. He was predeceased by a brother, Gregory.

We miss Joe and hope that our remembrance of him helps to honor his passing. Terri, we are thinking of you today.

Rest in peace, Joseph. We are all so proud of you.
Posted by Roberta on 2007-02-02 A day does not go by that I do not think about Joe. I know that his family misses him terribly and I pray for them daily. All those who ever met him are better persons for having known him. I wear his memorial bracelet and get asked about it often. His memory will always live on.

"The thing he was known for, especially at the end, was being the biggest Cub Scout there was. In the spring of 2001, Joe and our boys, Joey and Robbie, entered their handmade cars in Pack 970's pinewood derby. Joe won for Pack 970, and then he took second place for the Two Rivers District [in southern Prince George's County]. Robbie and I wore wolf neckerchiefs, but Joe and Joey wore Webelos neckerchiefs. You know, Webelos actually stands for something: Well be loyal scouts. It's appropriate." Terri Pycior, wife

Hi Joe,Even though we had not talked since high school, I often thought of you and how we used to all play together between seventh and eighth streets. Terry, I don't know if you remember me from high school but we were in the ROTC together and I remember when you started dating Joe. Joe and I were best buddies when we were little. I am very blessed to have known such a wonderful person. My condolences go out to you and the boys and to his mom. I cannot believe it has been five years already. May god bless and watch over you and the boys always.

Lt. Vernon Allan Richard 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Lt. Vernon Allan Richard. Vernon Richard, his wife, Dorothy, recalled, "loved anything that had to do with roller coasters." His daughter, Vernessa, a college student, recalled the same thing."When I'd come home for the summer, we'd go to Great Adventure," Vernessa Richard said, "and he'd look up at the roller coaster and go 'Wow! Let's go on that!' The excitement on his face!"

Lieutenant Richard, 53, was a 24-year veteran of the Fire Department. A member of Ladder Company 7 in Manhattan, he was to have been promoted to captain in November, an elevation that occurred posthumously. A weight lifter and jogger (he ran six New York City Marathons), he sang in the choir at the First Baptist Church in Spring Valley, N.Y., near his home in Nanuet. His voice , a deep baritone, was memorable. "When I played high school ball, and there were maybe 500 people in the stands, I'd hear nothing but his voice," said his son, Vernon II. "He'd be saying, 'Go to work, Vernon.'

Till this day I think about and miss my uncle... I miss his laughter and how he used to cut my sandwiches for lunch... till this day I cut my sandwiches just like my Uncle Vernon... He will always be missed but never forgotten and will always live in our hearts.. RIP Captain Vernon A Richard I... 9-10-09

Lt Vernon was my friend since we were teenagers, and I was deeply sad when I heard he lost his life on Sept 11. He will be missed deeply.

On 9-11-08 I participated in a memorial stair climb in Denver Colorado and was given the name and picture of Lt. Vernon A. Richard. I didn't know Lt Richard, and I haven't even been to New York. I, like most Americans, watched the events of 9-11-01 on TV. I just wanted to take the time to honor Lt Richard and the other 342 firefighters that gave their lives on that day in an effort to save thousands of people. I also wanted to tell the family of Lt Richard how sorry I am for their loss and that the thoughts and prayers of my family are with them. I was honored to climb in his memory.Lt Steve KornegayWest Metro Fire RescueLakewood, Colorado

Alan N. Palumbo 9/11/01

I have the honor of paying tribute to Alan N. Palumbo. I was not able to find a picture for him for my post - sorry about that. Alan worked for Cantor Fitzgerald on September 11, 2001. A Curtis High School graduate and Army veteran, he spent most of his life in his native Rosebank before settling in Richmond a decade ago.
Mr. Palumbo lost his parents and a brother at a young age, but stayed close to his family through the years. He was especially fond of his niece, Allison Nicole Palumbo, whom her mother named after her Uncle Alan. In addition to his brother, Gary, surviving are his sister, Donna Palumbo, and another brother, Doug Hersch.
A broker at Cantor Fitzgerald, he never skimped on quality. "He lived a good life," said his brother, Gary Hersch. "He ate the best, drank the best and went top-shelf wherever he went. I don't think he had any regrets." Palumbo also stayed tight with a neighborhood group of childhood friends. "He was a character," said Mark Unrein, a friend. "He excelled in all the neighborhood games. Basketball, cards, stickball, pitching quarters."
m look at your picture as I write this. I wish I could tell everyone what a wonderful person you really were. You were such a tough guy on the outside but a real caring person deep down and I miss that part of you so much. Carly just talks about you every day. Her dad went on a plane ride and she just figured when he was up there that he could pick you up and bring you home to us, they overheard her tell her brother that. Its amazing the way a child's mind works. She misses you so much and so do I. I hope everyday that you are safe now and I joke all the time and say that God did not know what he was in for with you there, I figure you have everyone laughing with the way you joke around and that makes it that much easier for me. I will never ever forget you and the big heart that you always hid but I got you to show it. I miss you everyday.
